Stupid Freaking Auto Installing Spy/Software
Published on October 26, 2003 By russellmz In Personal Computing
I was merrily scrolling through my Add/Remove programs list trying to free some hard drive space by deleting unused programs. I am a virtual packrat, hoarding programs "just in case", or "maybe one day I'll use it". Towards the end I see a program called Viewpoint Media Player. Never downloaded and installed this. Never saw it before. Immediately I knew it was some junk spyware program that somehow got onto my system and didn't get caught by my spyware deleting programs.

So, like any sensible person with a question and an internet connection, I headed to google.com. There I eventaully got to an anti-spyware page that said Viewpoint was bundled with the new version of AIM, which I had downloaded some weeks ago.

Damn. It.

The AIM(AOL Instant Messenger) installer didn't say anything about other programs being installed on my computer. Most likely my firewall stoppped it from sending any random info out but I can't be sure what the damn thing has done.

Here is my privacy policy: I do not want any type of crap on my computer unless I specifically OK it. I do not want anything installed without my permission. I don't want some poorly programmed piece of crap crashing my computer, changing my bookmarks and homepage, and making itself part of the operating system so I can't delete it without instructions from the internet. I do not want programs that record what I am doing. I don't want programs accessing the internet at random intervals to send data to its home servers. I don't care if "At no point is the CUID connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information". I don't freaking believe what is written in the privacy policy (which I didn't even get a chance to read since it installed without my knowledge), nor do I trust your abilities to safeguard my personal data even if you are telling the truth.

When can you install something on my computer? If you get within arms length distance of my computer and can install it before I cave your head in with a baseball bat, then I will allow it.

Anyway, I went to Add/Remove programs, highlighted it, and hit Remove.

Then I went to my file search utility and told it to look for anything with the name "Viewpoint". There were two or three separate folders still on my hard drive with the Viewpoint name. Lazy pieces of crap were too freaking lazy to program the remove utility properly and actually have it REMOVE the damn program. I had to delete the folders manually after making sure that nothing important was in them. Most likely AIM will still function normally over the next few days but now I have a nagging what-if to deal with. F--kers. The both of them.

That is why I like freeware but not adware or spyware. Freeware is usually all about respecting the user. Consider: I have a popup blocker, server proxy that stops internet ads and other annoying internet inventions like auto-playing looping music and scripts that change your bookmarks. I have a firewall. I never download any program unless I am sure it is an official patch/program or that it is a widely known and used freeware program. Yet this thing still got onto my computer and I haven't noticed it for days or weeks. Makes me wonder how many computers are now happily sending info to their home servers. Don't worry too much. I'm quite sure the spyware authors are hard at work making sure that "At no point is [your] CUID connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information".

addendum:
Some people are still having problems even after they delete Viewpoint. The only thing actions I can recommend is after going to Add/Remove and removing Viewpoint to go to Start > Find > Files & Folders and search for "Viewpoint". Delete anything in there that you think is part of the Viewpoint Media Player program. If you still have problems try these spyware removing programs:

Spybot
Adaware

I noticed that I had "Wildtangent" installed on my computer. I checked the date and I looked for anything else that was installed at the same time and date. Yes, AIM and Viewpoint Media Player were installed at the same time. I got rid of Wildtangent using Ad-Aware. I then went through the manual process and deleted any other leftover registry entries. Now I have to spend more time getting rid of this viewpoint garbage. I uninstalled it because Ad-Aware did not detect it. After uninstalling, I noticed that the viewpoint folder was still in program files and there was a file called AxMetaStream_0302021C_.dll. I used the command RegSvr32 /u "c:\program files\viewpoint media player\AxMetaStream_0302021C_.dll" to unregister that dll. The viewpoint uninstaller didn't unregister it, surprise surprise. Now I have to go looking to see what else is left. I have better things to do than dealing with this bull. I read on another site that Viewpoint acts like a browser plug-in so it can get around firewalls. I don't know if that is true, but nice, eh?

"You have spyware!" - AOL

Here is a message that I just sent to support@viewpoint.com . I'll post a response if I get one:

I noticed that Viewpoint Media Player was installed on my system when I installed AIM. I want to remove your software completely. I used "add/remove programs" and it only partially uninstalled your software. For example, the dll file "AxMetaStream_0302021C_.dll" was NOT unregistered. I had to use RegSvr32 to manually unregister it. Please ask your programmers not to be so sloppy with the uninstall software in the future.

What registry entries did your software add to my computer? I would like you to send me the procedure to delete every last byte that Viewpoint Media Player installed on my computer.

If you have to sneak your software on unsuspecting people's computers, what does that say about your company and it's corporate ethics?

Does anyone have the viewpoint icon in there control panel its a blue arrow?
Al my Zonealarm alerted me that viewpoit was trying to connect to the internet, but then I didn`t download it with any AOL software(goti it from Thermaltake website), it may intergrate in a different manner i suppose.

yeah, exactly true, I got the same thing and had to run ad-aware after I noticed viewpoint media player in my add/remove programs. Had to manually get rid of the shit. Thanks for your view on this.

AIM seems to be consistently including spyware with their newer versions. The newest version evidently comes with WildTangent.
You know, those winamp visualizations everyone seems to be so keen on. They're now classified as spyware.

I'm in no affiliated with them, but I'd recommend trillian. They have a free version, but i liked it so much that i bought it ($25). I can tell
you that the Pro version you have to pay for doesn't have anything much more than the free one. There are some neat plugins, but
nothing earth shattering. I bought it just encourage development.
http://www.trillian.cc

There are other free clients too that will work on windows. I've not really tried out any of them because trillian works great.
I know of gaim, but only ever used it on solaris & linux.

happy im'ing.

I am very confused as to whether or not I need Viewpoint if I keep AIM and if I do not need it, how to remove it since it keeps coming back after I delete it from add/delete programs. If I need to delete from the registry, please be clear how to do it since I have never done it before.

I agree wholeheartedly !!!!!!! I programmed my first computer in 1962 using toggle switches. in 1965, I graduated to punch cards. We had no worries what was on our puter then cause WE put everything there.. Sometimes, I long for "the good ole days"..
Thanks for the info !!! I am searching for spyware on my computer-- I know it's there, but it has eluded me so far..

Noticed this on a lab (youth center I work at) a few days ago. According to the SW manifest, it shipped with the systems, so I left it...after reflexively blowing it away on one box. Toshiba HW, so that would explain the tie-in.

That's why I stopped using AIM. I love trillian.

I agree with everyting said. You know, they've put some poor "trying to get ahead" people out of business for "spamming" , when the "spam" was in fact a reply to an e-mail ad SENT BY THE PERSON WHO COMPLAINED ABOUT THE "SPAM!" It happens quite often, believe me. Yet it's OK for those scum to invade computers like they do, without permission. What does that tell you? C'mon, THINK! The dirty creeps with the power to shut people down for false "SPAM" reports are obviously in on the whole "spy" business! "Money talks," after aLL. An excellent example is Viewpoint sneaking in with AOL Insatant Messenger. Ever wonder how Bill Gates just keeps on making all the BILLIONS? EVERY time I use Internet Explorer (Microsoft), I'm bombarded by all the crap on the internet:Pop-ups galore, being thrown to alien websites, & parasites by the DOZENS roll in, to mention some of things that "Explorer" brings with it. I was hit by 7 Trojan Viruses in three days,( Thank God for Norton Anti-Virus!),EVERY ONE OF THEM as soon as I opened up "Explorer!" This is no fluke: this is a "Gates!" And possibly every other Conglomerate in "ComputerWorld!" The internet has lots of honest, hard working, and too trusting people on it. It has many. many more greedy, dishonest, heartless & downright no good dirty creeps that ruin it for everyone! Unfortunately, all we'll EVER be able to do about these issues is discuss them & vent our anger. The ones that can really stop it all, are the ones that are doing it! Isn't that obvious when you REALLY give it some thought?!
